SLCgreen Highlights from 2014

Happy New Year! It’s been a busy year for the Salt Lake City Green team, and we look forward to an exciting 2015 with your ongoing support. Since we’re in a reflective mood, take a look at some of our highlights from 2014.

Climate Task Force

We started the year with Mayor Ralph Becker’s appointment to the White House’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. Both Mayor Becker and Sustainability Director Vicki Bennett attended a series of round tables throughout the year, which culminated in the presentation of recommendations to the President in Washington D.C.

Project Skyline

In May, Salt Lake City hosted EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy for a historic visit. In addition to a round table discussion with key partners, Administrator McCarthy joined Mayor Becker to kick off Project Skyline and the Mayor’s Skyline Challenge, a new initiative to curb energy waste from our city’s commercial buildings. SLCgov.com/ProjectSkyline

SmartTrips Sugar House

During the summer, we kicked off a new year of SmartTrips in the Sugar House/S-Line neighborhood. The program focused on encouraging residents to walk, bike and take public transit to reduce their vehicle trips and impact on air quality. It was a great success! Over 500 households participated, increasing their alternative transit trips by 46% during the height of the program. SmartTripsSLC.com

SLC Goes Solar

In June, we flipped the switch on Salt Lake City’s new solar farm. The farm produces 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually for our net zero Public Safety Building. We also celebrated two other important solar projects at the event, rooftop installations on the Public Safety Building and Plaza 349. Over 4,000 solar panels were installed on the three project sites, which will generate 1.7 million kilowatt-hours annually. SLCgreenBlog.com

Popperton Plots Community Garden

In August we celebrated the successful opening and dedication of the Popperton Plots Community Garden in the Avenues. Popperton is one of the first community gardens to open on a parcel of city-owned land, made available through an expanded Green City Growers program. Popperton was also the receipient of a Partners for Places grant to support their development. It was a wonderful harvest celebration and an important milestone! Sustainable Business Leadership Award

In November, Sustainability Director Vicki Bennett was recognized by Utah Business Magazine with a Sustainable Leadership Award, and the whole SLCgreen team was there to help her celebrate! Vicki has led Salt Lake City’s award-winning Salt Lake City Green program for 13 years, spearheading initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and divert waste from the landfill. SmartTrips Salt Lake City is a neighborhood-based program that encourages active and public transportation through collaborative community events, educational newsletters and free kits delivered by bicycle.

SmartTrips is modeled after similar efforts in Portland, Oregon and other communities, which have all successfully reduced vehicle trips and emissions among participants.

This year SmartTrips is visiting Sugar House and the neighborhoods along the recently launched S-Line streetcar. Learn more here:  www.smarttripsslc.com.

Intern Learning Opportunities

Enjoy getting to know your neighborhood by bicycle?  Want to support and work with local businesses to incentivize their customers to leave their cars at home?  Looking for an outlet to write about air quality?  Like collaborating with schools, libraries and local organizations on environmental education?

The opportunities for interns to get involved are many!  We invite you to bring your own interests, skills and ideas to our team.

Requirements

  • Ideal candidates are passionate and knowledgeable about alternative transportation, sustainability, community organizing, and/or the Sugar House area.
  • We ask for a 15-25 hour per week commitment from May to August 2014. Know that there is opportunity to start as early as April or extend through September.
  • Be flexible to attend some SmartTrips events and bicycle deliveries that may occur in the evening and on weekends.

SmartTrips Rolls into a New Neighborhood

Are you dreaming of warmer days and bluer skies? So are we!

SLCgreen was recently awarded a grant from the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR) to fund our SmartTrips 2014 neighborhood! Even though it is hazy and cold outside, we’re moving full speed ahead with some exciting plans for 2014.

The newly launched SmartTripsSLC Instagram is making a splashy debut, hosting a series of images from the new neighborhood. Take a peek and see if you can #guesswhere in SLC!

Stay tuned for the neighborhood announcement and a new SmartTrips SLC blog chock full of awesome content.

Fairpark Takes a Promenade

This is a guest blog written by Sara Rose Tannenbaum of Salt Lake City’s SmartTrips Program.

On Saturday September 21st, over 40 neighbors gathered on the corner of 300 North and 900 West. While adults mingled under the shade of the giant Coca-Cola billboard, kids chased chickens and discovered eggs in the maze of sunflowers.

The reason for their gathering was the Fairpark Promenade, a collaborative “Community Walk around the Block” hosted by the Fairpark Community Council, the Urban Growth Garden and SmartTrips Fairpark.

Fairpark Promenade: Not to be missed!

Salt Lake City’s SmartTrips program, in collaboration with the Fairpark Community Council, will host one last community event this weekend to bring the community together for some good old-fashioned community appreciation!

Residents are invited to join their neighbors on a friendly ~1 mile exploration around a couple of local blocks. Kids, red flyers, wheelchairs, broad-brimmed hats and parasols welcome!

Ever wondered when that old building on the corner was built? Imagined what your neighborhood looked like 50 years ago? Or speculated who the green thumbs are behind those beautiful community garden vegetables?

The two block area of this first Fairpark Community Walk Around the Block is surprisingly rich in history, cultural centers and urban gardens—each with current and/or historical special meaning to residents old and new.

Don’t miss the Fairpark Promenade: A Community Walk Around the Block this Saturday, September 21st from 4-6 p.m. Fun!

Whoops! SmartTrips Mailer Missing Instructions

The Salt Lake City SmartTrips program recently sent out a postcard to residents living in the city’s Fairpark neighborhood. But due to a printing error, the postcard is missing some important instructions!

On the back of the postcard, a small pair of scissors and dotted line were omitted, which indicate that residents should cut the postcard in half and mail it back to receive their free goodies.

SmartTrips Comes to Fairpark

Following a very successful pilot in the East Liberty Park neighborhood, the SmartTrips program returns for the 2013 summer season — this time to the Fairpark neighborhood.

A lot is happening in Fairpark, making it the perfect place to offer customized bike, walk and public transit information and resources to residents. The Airport TRAX line opens in a little over a week on Saturday, April 13th. And the North Temple corridor has been improved to make it Salt Lake City’s first Complete Street – with infrastructure for public transit, personal vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

What is SmartTrips?

SmartTrips is a neighborhood-based program that encourages public and active transportation through free bike/walk/transit kits, coupons to local businesses, educational newsletters and collaborative community events.

The Salt Lake City SmartTrips program is modeled after similar programs in Portland, Oregon and other communities, which have all successfully reduced the number of vehicle trips.

How Do I Participate?

Fairpark residents will be receiving the first of three SmartTrips newsletters in the mail this week. Included in the newsletter is a program order form, which allows residents to choose from bike, walk and transit kits that include maps, pamphlets and freebies such as a bike light, pedometer and UTA passes.

Also included is a SmartTrips Coupon Book with discounts at a variety of retailers located in the Fairpark neighborhood. And for those who prefer it, there is an online order form as well.
